A new review article by Roger Hasler, Ciril Reiner-Rozman, Christoph Kleber, Jakub Dostalek and Wolfgang Knoll from Danube Private University (DPU) explores how field-effect transistors (FETs) can be combined with complementary sensing technologies to advance label-free biosensing and the study of biomolecular interactions. Published in Advanced Electronic Materials, the review, “Beyond Charge: Field-Effect Transistors in Multimodal Biosensing Platforms for Biomolecular Interaction Studies,” examines the growing field of FET-based multi-transducer systems.

While FET biosensors have long been recognized for their potential to enable compact, low-cost and real-time detection, challenges related to stability, reliability and signal interpretation have limited their broader commercialization. Combining FETs with complementary transducers can help overcome these limitations by providing information on different aspects of molecular recognition at the sensor interface.

The review places particular emphasis on SPR-FET dual-mode platforms, demonstrating how the simultaneous measurement of electrical and optical signals can provide a more comprehensive picture of biomolecular interactions than either technique alone. By moving “beyond charge” as the sole sensing mechanism, multimodal FET systems open new opportunities for more reliable and information-rich biosensing platforms.
