When Europe looks at successful science–business collaboration, DPU´s PI-SENS is part of the story.
How can excellent research become innovation that makes a real difference to people's lives?
This was one of the central questions of a European Commission study visit to Austria, dedicated to strengthening cooperation between science and business and accelerating the transfer of research results into market-oriented solutions.

A delegation of 18 representatives from Armenia, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine visited Austria to learn from successful examples of research, innovation and knowledge valorisation. One of the highlights of the programme was the visit to Krems. Hosted by the University for Continuing Education Krems (UWK), the delegation gained insights into successful approaches to science–business collaboration and Horizon Europe activities. As part of this programme, Prof. Dr. Christoph Kleber, Professor of Chemistry at Danube Private University (DPU), was invited as a guest to present the COMET project PI-SENS – Personalized Medicine Enabled by Intelligent Sensing Systems. As best practice example from Austria PI-SENS brings together materials science, biomedical research, advanced sensing technologies and intelligent data processing with one ambitious goal: to develop technologies that enable healthcare to detect, understand and respond to disease earlier and more precisely. From innovative biosensors and biomarker detection to electronic nose technologies and the analysis of volatile compounds, PI-SENS explores new ways of making the human body "measurable" – opening up exciting perspectives for personalised and preventive medicine. What makes the project particularly powerful is its focus on the entire innovation pathway: Fundamental research → applied research → prototypes → industrial cooperation → healthcare innovation. This is precisely the kind of science–business collaboration that can help bridge the “Valley of Death” between a promising scientific discovery and a technology that reaches the real world.
For Prof. Christoph Kleber and the PI-SENS team, the invitation to present the project to an international European delegation is an important recognition of this approach. And for the DPU, it is a great opportunity to demonstrate how research, interdisciplinary collaboration and entrepreneurial thinking can contribute to the medicine of tomorrow. PI-SENS – sensing today for the personalised medicine of tomorrow.
